Cincinnati area taxpayers who missed one of the special Saturday tax assistance events held earlier this year will have an additional opportunity this filing season to get free, face-to-face tax assistance from IRS personnel.
The IRS will be one of several organizations participating in the inaugural free Financial Fitness Day event at Xavier University Conaton Learning Commons, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Saturday, April 2nd. The event offers Greater Cincinnatians a chance to have tax-related questions answered during an "Ask the Expert" session. An IRS employee will be on hand to assist with account issues. Also, community organizations will assist event attendees with free tax preparation, access to free credit reports, screenings for public benefits, foreclosure prevention information, financial documentation shredding, and more.
Taxpayers seeking tax preparation and filing assistance at either event should bring valid, government-issued photo identification and all tax-related documents necessary for filing a complete, accurate 2010 federal income tax return. Those who plan to "Ask the Expert" and/or seek free tax preparation assistance at the Financial Fitness Day event are asked to pre-register at www.uwgc.org/FinancialFitnessDay.
During the normal work week, free basic tax return preparation and filing assistance to taxpayers with income up to $49,000 is available at the two IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers (TACs) in the Greater Cincinnati area: 550 Main St., Cincinnati, and 9075 Centre Pointe Dr., West Chester. Normal business hours for both locations are Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Disabled and elderly taxpayers may call (513) 263-3333 to schedule an appointment at either TAC location; for all others, return preparation is completed by walk-in appointment only, based on availability.
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) sites will continue operations until April 15th in many communities throughout Greater Cincinnati. At VITA sites, volunteers provide free tax assistance to individual taxpayers (generally with incomes $49,000 and below) who cannot prepare their own return. At TCE sites, volunteers provide free tax help to people 60 years and older. Volunteer return preparers sponsored by various organizations are IRS-certified to help prepare basic returns; most locations offer e-filing. A listing of area VITA sites can be found at www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=234170,00.html. For information on area TCE sites, coordinated and staffed by AARP Tax-Aide counselor volunteers, go to www.aarp.org/applications/VMISLocator/searchTaxAideLocations.action or call 1-888-227-7669.
Taxpayers with mobility issues who are unable to access IRS tax forms and instructions online at www.IRS.gov may request to have needed IRS documents mailed to their homes by calling the IRS Forms and Publications customer service line at 1-800-TAX-FORM (800-829-3676). Forms and instructions requested typically ship within two weeks, so requests should be made without further delay.
For most taxpayers, the filing deadline for 2010 federal income tax returns is April 18, 2011.
