One man is in jail after police say he drove away following an accident that killed a 3-year-old and left his mother in critical condition.
Shakir West, 3, and his mother, 29-year-old Niya Taylor, were walking northbound on Grand Avenue through the intersection with Westwood Avenue at 6:47 a.m. on Saturday in a marked crosswalk.
At the same time, 24-year-old Rodolfo Jose Temaj-Felix was traveling eastbound on Westwood Avenue in a 2001 Hyundai Sonata. Witnesses say he ran a red light and hit the two pedestrians.
After the crash, police say Temaj-Felix, attempted to leave the scene. An off-duty police officer who witnessed the crash followed Temaj-Felix to the Clifton area until officers were able to arrest him. He is currently at the Hamilton County Detention Center charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, aggravated vehicular assault and felony leaving the scene of an accident.
Niya Taylor was transported to University Hospital where she is listed in critical condition.
Shakir West was taken to Children's Hospital where he later died from his injuries.
According to Cincinnati Police, alcohol was a factor in this crash. The incident remains under investigation.
Hamilton County court records show that earlier this week, Temaj-Felix was in front of a judge charged with driving without a licence in the same vehicle that caused the accident. He pled guilty and was ordered to pay a fine.
