HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY (FOX19) - Northern Kentucky University President James Votruba said during a speech Wednesday that a move to Division I "makes sense" to the university.
Votruba spoke at the spring convocation and said he also believes the move is affordable, and that, "in many respects, we are a Division I institution now," citing the NKU's size, facilities, academic programs and faculty.
"When the NCAA reclassification moratorium ends this fall, (Votruba) expects to ask the NKU Board of Regents to give it full consideration," said NKU spokesman Chris Cole in an e-mail to FOX19.
Students FOX19 spoke with say they hope NKU can gain the Division 1 ranking.
"I think that you would see a bigger push toward people wanting to say, I'm from Northern Kentucky University, I'm from this area, I have a dog in this race," said grad student Rick Cates.
"The largest way it would impact this would be student growth, I think if there is more recognition of the school. More people would come in maybe from out of state," said NKU student Ashtin Odoy.
Cole also said via Twitter that two conferences that would be of interest to NKU are the Horizon League and the Ohio Valley Conference.
