WESTWOOD, OH (FOX19) - The apartment building at 2570 Harrison Avenue is in pieces after a long awaited demolition.
Crews started tearing down the building just before noon on Wednesday after years of community effort to have it removed.
Originally built in the 1960s the building has been vacant for years and attracts crime to the neighborhood.
"There was drug dealing, there was prostitution and just general not keeping up the property," says Melva Gweyn.
Gweyn along with the Westwood Civic Association has been vocal and active to bring down the blighted building and clean up Harrison Avenue.
"It's a great day for Westwood...a real great day for Westwood and wish there were more coming down with it," says Jerry Defilipps. Defilipps is a member of the Westwood Citizens on Patrol keeping an eye on the community.
Demolition crews say it will take several days to completely tear down the property and there are currently no plans on what will replace it.
