A memorial service is underway for a Highlands High School graduate who died in Operation Enduring Freedom.

A group of Pvt. Brandon Pickering's family and friends has organized a memorial/prayer service for on Saturday, April 16, 2011, from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Highlands Middle School Gymnasium. This service will give family, friends and the Fort Thomas community an opportunity to pay their respects.

It's likely that formal services will not take place for a couple weeks, as there may be services at bases where Pickering was stationed.

Pickering died April 10 in Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Landstuhl, Germany, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire and a rocket propelled grenade in Wardak province, Afghanistan, April 8.

He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Polk, La.
