Former president and professor of Miami University, Phillip R. Shriver, passed away on Saturday in Oxford. He was 88.
Shriver was president at Miami University from 1965-1981 and professor of history from 1947-1998. He taught at least one class every year except one during his 52-year career in the classroom, even while he was Miami's president.
His first years in academia were at Kent State University where he was a professor of American and Ohio history from 1947-1965. He became dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in 1963.
Those who knew Shriver say he was known for his deep fondness for Miami and his respect for students. He was also known for his knowledge of history and remembering the names of everyone he met.
Phillip Shriver is survived by Martha, his wife of 67 years, his five children, and extended family.
Details on services and memorials will be announced at a later date.
