A waterlogged kindergarten in Butler County is finally back open and the Fairfield School Board has made a decision about the days that were missed due to flooding.
School resumed Thursday morning at the Fairfield Kindergarten Center. AM kindergarten was closed for two days and PM kindergarten was closed for four days, thanks to a flooded parking lot.
Parents and kids will have to make up the days. The Fairfield School Board is held a special meeting Thursday afternoon to discuss different options for making up those missed days.
The decision means parents may have to change their schedules. School buses splashed through water to pick up students Thursday, but it is a big improvement from what it looked like a week ago. "We are hoping that it continues to improve so that we can get back to business as usual as soon as possible," said Kim Wotring, Fairfield Principal.
With two missed days of school for AM kindergartners and four missed days for PM kindergartners, by law, the days must be made up. Parents like Curtis Ross favor the first option, which would make up the days by extending the school day for 30 minutes in May. "Keep them in school longer, you have a half an hour to get things finished, you've got time to go to the bus stop and get them at the bus stop, it's more convenient, I would say so," said Curtis.
It would be less of an inconvenience for parents who may have already scheduled summer camps or vacations. "I would much rather have the school day lengthened, because people have already made summer plans, and at this point we thought we were safe from the snow, and other weather issues, so it seems like it would be easier to go ahead with plans as usual," said Erin Kingrey, Fairfield parent.
On the other hand, some parents and grandparents say kindergartners can't concentrate for another 30 minutes and they would prefer the second option, where students would make up the days at the end of the year. "It's preferable for the kids to stay short days is school rather than longer, because as I said, they will be tired, tired of listening to the teachers," Delia Wong, Fairfield grandparent.
The Fairfield School Board decided on the first plan, extending the days by 30 minutes, however, the PM kindergarten will still have one extra day at the end of the school year.
Letters about the changes will go home with students on Friday explaining the changes. A call from the school's automated call system will go out Thursday night or Friday morning.
The AM kindergartners will have extended days until May 20th. The PM kindergartners will have extended days until May 27th and will also come back June 3rd to make up a half day.
AM kindergarten ends June 2nd with the rest of the district except for the seniors.
Including snow days, -Including snow days, AM kindergartners have had nine calamity days so far, and PM kindergartners have had 11 calamity days.
