MIDDLETOWN, OH (FOX19) -
Middletown Police have arrested a suspect for killing a 75-year-old Middletown man.

Victor Morris Gantt, 25, is charged with murder for the death of Leroy Jones, 75. Gantt is also charged with petty theft and criminal damaging.

A short time before 2:30 p.m. Monday, Middletown Police received a call from neighbors, after Jones' wife returned home and couldn't find her husband.

When police arrived at the home at 2200 block of Brentwood Street, they found Jones dead, apparently of blunt force trauma. Police believe that act of violence was random.

Neighbors say before the suspect got inside Jones' home, he was going up and down the street, knocking on doors, trying to get in other homes.

"They asked if they could come in and use my bathroom, and I was locking my door as they were talking, because it was just odd," said Candise Snelling, who lives down the street from Jones.

"My door was banged on at 4 O'clock in the morning," said Carl, a neighbor who didn't want to give his last name.

Another neighbor who didn't want to be identified said she told police that a brick was thrown through her  grandmother's window.

"It was kind of frightening because my grandma's an elderly lady, so I was just thankful that it didn't happen to her," said the neighbor.

Police say Jones let Gantt inside his home, then Gantt hit him with an object, killing the 75-year-old grandfather and husband.

Neighbors say they wish they would have called police as soon as the suspect knocked on their door.

"After I found out that he had stopped at other houses, I thought maybe I should have called the cops, so I would tell other people, if you see something really suspicious like that, you should call the cops," Snelling said.

"My prayers go out to that family, I actually went to school with the grandchildren so, it was kind of hard," said another neighbor.

Gantt is due back in court next week.
