LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear says he wasn't snubbing Barack Obama when he missed the president's appearance at Fort Campbell on Friday.
Beshear says he couldn't break his commitments to meet with business prospects at Churchill Downs. Another prominent Democrat, House Speaker Greg Stumbo, said Saturday he would have advised the governor to attend the Fort Campbell event where Obama honored the U.S. commandos he sent after terror mastermind Osama bin Laden.
Stumbo said the Fort Campbell event wasn't political but was meant to honor the commando team. Beshear said he tried to juggle his schedule but couldn't work it out.
He said he had long-standing commitments to meet with business executives during Kentucky Oaks day.
Beshear and Stumbo made the comments while making the social rounds at the Kentucky Derby.
