CLIFTON, OH (FOX19) - This week is Oral, Head & Neck Cancer Awareness Week, so free screenings were being offered Thursday at University Hospital.
Last year when UC did the free screenings, the hospital saw 20 people. This year, 126 people have already scheduled the free screening.
It could have something to do with actor Michael Douglas, who talked about his throat cancer a few weeks ago on Oprah. He encouraged viewers to schedule a screening.
That message is the same that the hospital is trying to send.
"Normally this cancer is thought to be of only smokers and people who drink a lot, and really it's not that case anymore," said Angie Keith, University Hospital, "So we want people to be aware of that, so that's why we're offering the free screenings."
The event was so popular that hospital has decided to add another free screening to their schedule. This event will be held on June 9 at the University Hospital.
