New details in the case of Anthony Sowell, accused Cleveland Strangler.
Defense attorneys for accused serial killer Anthony Sowell just filed papers asking for a transcript of everything a prosecutor said on Monday tying Sowell to yet another rape.
A woman came forward to Cleveland Police this year saying she had been raped in Cleveland Heights in 2009.
Turns out, Cleveland Police never tested the evidence they collected from her.
The state confirms it has had DNA evidence for Sowell in a database since the mid-90s. That evidence could have been used to connect Sowell to a rape long before he was arrested as a serial killer.
Cleveland Heights police had DNA from a rape in April of 2009, but that evidence was never sent to a lab.
Investigators could have compared that to the database to identify Sowell as a suspect.
The Cleveland Heights Chief tells 19 Action News he is looking into what happened. He was not chief at the time.
Sowell is accused of killing eleven women and burying their bodies in and around his Imperial Avenue home. He is facing the death penalty.
