`Hero' charged with murder in 2 arson deaths

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A 32-year-old Indianapolis man hailed as a hero for trying to rescue victims of a home fire has admitted setting the blaze.

Gary Allen was being held Saturday on two preliminary counts of murder at the Marion County Jail after being arrested late Friday.

The fire Tuesday in the Fountain Square neighborhood of Indianapolis' south side killed 63-year-old Anna Richards. Her 47-year-old, wheelchair bound son, Jerry Richards, died Thursday from his fire-related injuries.

Allen at first was portrayed as a hero for trying to rescue the victims, but The Indianapolis Star reports inconsistencies in his public statements brought him under suspicion, and he confessed to setting the fire to get back at the landlord because he and the two victims were being evicted from the home.
