MASON, OH (FOX19) - Ground-breaking on the area's first Edible Forest Garden will take place on May 25th at Endeavor Learning Center, an eco-friendly child care provider and preschool located on Cox-Smith Road in Mason.
Developed in partnership with local organic landscaping and nursery Marvin's Organic Gardens, the project is an addition to the center's environmentally conscious curriculum. "We're always looking to enhance our students' learning experience," said Endeavor co-owner Donna Phillips, "and the Edible Forest Garden provides a truly unique opportunity for us to do so."
Certified as an Eco-Healthy Child Care center, Endeavor will use the garden to teach children about sustainability and organic food production while also providing a safe place to play and discover the joys of nature.
The Edible Forest Garden, designed to function as a food production ecosystem, which will be utilized by the school children and their families, is a concept based on the natural intermixing of plant life in a forest. Unlike common gardens, the plant life is perennial and will continue to produce food year after year. The garden will consist of a variety of fruit and nut trees, edible shrubs, bushes, and vegetables.
The Edible Forest Garden is the first phase of Endeavor's nature playscape that will also include a rain garden and a native prairie garden.
