SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates says the nation's security and prosperity depend on making sure the armed forces get the necessary equipment, training and funding.

Gates made the statement during his commencement address Sunday at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. Gates say it's important not to lose sight of the nation's global security needs as the federal government deals with its large budget deficits. He says it's important for America to sustain its alliances, protect its trade and reduce the chances of future wars.

Gates also got an honorary degree at the ceremony, held at Notre Dame Stadium.

The school says 3,100 students received their degrees Sunday.
