Boy drowns during outing from mental health center

RICHMOND, Ind. (AP) - Authorities say a 15-year-old boy drowned while swimming in an eastern Indiana river with other teens from a mental health treatment center.

Police in Richmond say the group of about a dozen teens from Wernle Youth and Family Treatment Center was swimming in the Whitewater River on Monday with an adult supervising.

Police Lt. Bryan Ervin tells the Palladium-Item that a current eddy from an old bridge nearby likely cause the boy to go under water in the area that is about 14 feet deep.

Divers got the boy out of the water about a half hour after he went under, but he was soon pronounced dead at a hospital. Wernle center CEO Darrell Gordon says those at the residential center are devastated by the drowning.
