The matchups for the 14th Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown high school football event have been set, and event organizer Tom Gamble says this event is probably the best lineup of football he's ever assembled.
The lineup includes football powerhouses from Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, Dayton and even Columbus in the event that includes 17 games in a ten day period in late August.
"We're very excited to be playing in the Showdown," said Colerain head coach Tom Bolden. "In fact, we'll kick off practice tomorrow." Ohio schools are allowed ten practices from June 1st until the end of July.
Games for the 14th annual Skyline chili Crosstown Showdown will kick off in Kentucky on Friday, August 19th when Cooper High School takes on Ryle at Ryle at 6:55 p.m.
Then the action shifts to Ohio on Wednesday, August 24th at Colerain where Walnut Hills will take on Wyoming at 7 p.m. The next day, also at Colerain, features a doubleheader of Cincinnati teams. At 5:30 p.m. North College Hill will play Reading and at 8 p.m. Mt. Healthy will take on Roger Bacon.
"Our kids are excited and we can't wait for August to get here," said Bruce Baarendse, North College Hill's head coach.
On Friday, August 26th, a pair of double-headers will take place. Anderson and Princeton will kick off at 6 p.m. at UC's Nippert Stadium, followed by Oak Hills and LaSalle at 8:30 p.m. Over in Northern Kentucky Covington Catholic will take on Dixie Heights at 6 p.m. while Beechwood and Simon Kenton will follow at 8:30 p.m. Also that night Elder will travel to Centerville to play the Elks at 7:30 p.m.
The next day features four games on UC's campus. Moeller takes on Pickerington Central at noon. Lakota West and Winton Woods lock horns at 2:45 p.m. followed by McNicholas and Newport Central Catholic at 5:30 and the night will be capped off with St. Xavier taking on Springfield at 8:15 p.m.
Also on that Saturday four teams will take to the turf of Dayton's Welcome Stadium for a doubleheader. Hamilton plays Northmont at 5 p.m. and Middletown takes on Huber Heights Wayne at 7:30 p.m.
On Sunday the 28th, out at Colerain, Taft will play Friendship Collegiate Academy out of Washington D.C. at 11 a.m. in a game that will be broadcast on ESPNU. Following that game, ESPN will broadcast a 3 p.m. kickoff between Colerain and Cocoa, Fla.
Taft's Mike Martin is excited about the Senator's chances to play on national TV. He also said that the success of the basketball program is turning more kids to football at Taft. "We've got 6-foot-6 kids, weigh 300 pounds that are coming out now to play football because they want to play, and win a state title for themselves."
