Former Kenton County Police Sergeant laid to rest

Brett Benton Brett Benton
KENTON COUNTY, KY (FOX19) -

The Kenton County community said goodbye Wednesday to former officer Brett Benton.

Sgt. Brett Benton was working as an independent contractor in training members of the Afghan Police Force when he was killed by an IED earlier this month.

His funeral was conducted with full police honors at the First Christian Church in Richmond, Kentucky on Wednesday.

Born and raised in Madison County, Benton started his law enforcement career working as a dispatcher for the Kentucky State Police in Richmond.

Law enforcement officers from around the state and locally gathered to pay their respects and support the brotherhood.

"In our time of sorrow when we lose one of our members, the community realizes what we're trying to do for them and they come together to support us and show us that support," says Captain Ken Clark with the Berea Police Department.

"He touched people where ever he went, if you met Brett, you remembered him."
