CINCINNATI (AP) - An Iraq veteran and former contender for Cincinnati mayor says he'll challenge southwest Ohio U.S. Rep. Jean Schmidt in a Republican primary next year.
Brad Wenstrup says he plans to run because he has the "skill set and leadership potential" to serve in Congress.
He says his interest in the seat does not stem from anything Schmidt has done or hasn't done. Wenstrup is a foot surgeon and did a tour of duty in Iraq as a major in the U.S. Army Reserves.
Wenstrup scored 46 percent of the vote in his unsuccessful 2009 race against Democratic incumbent Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory.
Schmidt has served in Congress since 2005. Her office says she's focused on the economy and other issues, not any 2012 primary.
