Expect long delays on I-75/I-71 this weekend

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 6 announces another weekend of construction on I-75/I-71. Motorists should be aware of possible delays or lane closures on the following projects:

I-75/I-71 NB/SB (MP 186-191) Cut in the Hill in Kenton County

Northbound I-75 – (Cut in the Hill) MP 186-191 - Beginning tonight from Friday, June 17th beginning at 11:00 PM until 5:00 AM Monday, June 20th, traffic will be restricted to one lane between the Dixie Highway (Exit 188) and the Brent Spence Bridge. During this weekend closure, the Exit ramp (Exit 189) from I-75 to KY 1072 (Kyles Lane), the entrance ramp from KY 1072 (Kyles Lane) to I-75 northbound, the I-75 northbound exit ramp at 12th Street/MLK Blvd. (Exit 191) and the 4th Street entrance ramp to northbound I-75 will be closed.

Southbound I-75 (Cut in the Hill) MP 191 – 186 - Beginning this weekend from Friday, June 17th beginning at 11:00 PM until 5:00 AM Monday, June 20th, traffic will be restricted as follows between the Brent Spence Bridge to the Dixie Highway (Exit 188).

  • Friday, June 17th from 11:00 PM to Saturday, June 18th at 7:00 AM: Traffic will be restricted to one lane.
  • Saturday, June 18th from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM: Traffic will be restricted to two lanes.
  • Saturday, June 18th from 11:00 PM to Sunday, June 19th at 9:00 AM: Traffic will be restricted to one lane.
  • Sunday, June 19th from 9:00 AM to Monday, June 20th at 5:00 AM: Traffic will be restricted to two lanes.

The I-75 Southbound exit ramp at 5th Street (Exit 192) will be closed.

EXPECT LONG DELAYS. Use of an alternate route is advised. I-275 is the suggested alternate route.

I-275 WB from KY 9 (AA Highway) in Campbell County to US 25 (Dixie Highway) in Kenton County

  • Beginning Friday, June 3, the I-275 WB will be reduced to two lanes from before the I-275 Bridge over KY 17 and the I-275 Bridge over Horsebranch Road (79 – 81 mile-marker). The closure is scheduled to remain in place until 7 am on Monday, June 20, 2011.
  • The exit ramp from I-275 WB to KY 17 (Exit 80) will remain closed until Monday, June 20th. Suggested detour, continue on I-275 WB to Exit 82 (Turkeyfoot Road) and re-enter I-275 EB to Exit KY 17 (Exit 80).
  • The I-275 WB right hand lane and exit ramp to KY 9 (Exit 77) will be closed beginning at 7 pm, Friday, June 17, 2011 until 6 am, June 27th. Suggested detour, continue on I-275 WB to Exit 79 (Taylor Mill Road) and re-enter I-275 EB to Exit KY 9 (Exit 77).
  • Nightly lane closures are possible from 7 pm until 7 am on I-275 WB from KY 9 to US 25 Dixie Highway. Watch for trucks entering and leaving the roadway. Expect delays particularly during peak traffic times.

I-75 and I-275 Interchange in Kenton County (MP 186-184)

Traffic will encounter lane closures on I-75 and I-275 as scheduled below, as crews begin painting operations on the bridges at this interchange. The roadway will be reduced to two lanes of traffic between 7:00 PM and 10:00 PM, and then to one lane of traffic from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM the following morning. Traffic should use caution when traveling through these restrictions and be prepared for delays:

Motorists should watch for painting crews on:

  • I-75 southbound ramp to I-275 eastbound.
  • I-75 northbound ramp to I-275 westbound.

Oversized restrictions will be in place due to construction activities at the I-75 and I-275 interchanges in Northern Kentucky:

  • Loads are restricted to 16.5 ft in height and 12 feet in width on the ramp from I-75 northbound (MP 185) to I-275 westbound (MP 84).
  • Loads are restricted to 16.5 ft in height and 12 feet in width on the ramp from I-75 southbound (MP 185) to I-275 eastbound (MP 84).

These restrictions will be in place until August 1, 2011.

I-71 SB and NB in Boone and Gallatin Counties

  • Work already in progress. Crews will be working during weekdays only beginning Sunday at 10 pm until Fridays at noon. No weekend work will take place.
  • As part of the overall traffic plan for Kentucky Speedway events, KYTC will be closing the I-75 NB ramp (Exit 173) to I-71 SB beginning Tuesday, July 5, 2011. To prevent additional traffic impacts, construction crews will use this opportunity to do repairs on the ramp. A signed detour will be posted to direct traffic to proceed north on I-75, exit at Richwood (Exit 175) and re-enter I-75/I-71 SB to enter the I-71 SB ramp (Exit 173). The ramp will reopen July 15, 2011.

I -75 Asphalt Resurfacing in Boone County and Kenton Counties (MP 166 – 183)

  • Paving crews are resurfacing I-75 between MP 166 and MP 183. Lane closures will be in place both NB and SB between MP 166 (Grant/Boone County Line) to MP 176 just north of the Richwood Exit 175. Only night time work will be done on this resurfacing project beginning at 7 PM until 7 AM the following morning. Traffic should use caution through this work area and watch for slow or stopped traffic.

I-275 WB in Boone County

  • Work already in progress. Only night time work will be done on this section. Crews will typically be working from 7 pm until 5 am during the week with some weekend work also occurring.

District Wide Striping Operations – The district wide striping operation is ongoing throughout the district. This mobile operation will cover nearly the entire district over the course of the summer, scheduled to be complete by September 1st. Motorists are advised that wet paint is being applied to the roadway and to expect minor delays.

BOONE COUNTY

  • Burlington Pike (KY 18) from Orient St in Burlington (MP 10.6) to Boone Aire Road East (MP 14.0) – During the resurfacing project watch for nightly lane restrictions from 9:00 PM until 6:00 AM the following day. Please watch for flaggers and be aware of trucks entering and exiting the highway. Work is weather dependent. Expect minor delays. Work to take approximately two weeks.
  • Pleasant Valley Road (KY 237) from US 42 to Rose Petal Drive – As construction continues on this project, please watch for work crews along Pleasant Valley Road (KY 237), Gunpowder Road (KY 237) and the US 42 intersection. Old Toll Road is currently closed to through traffic between KY 237 and Harvey Quast (businesses remain accessible). Please watch for flaggers and be aware of trucks entering and exiting the highway. Motorists are advised that the speed limit has been reduced to 35 MPH through this area. Traffic may be stopped for short periods of time to allow equipment to pass. Expect minor delays.

BOONE-KENTON COUNTIES

  • Industrial Road (KY 1829) from Dixie Highway (US 25) to Turkeyfoot Road (KY 1303) – As construction continues on this project, please watch for work crews along Industrial Road (KY 1829). Please watch for flaggers and be aware of trucks entering and exiting the highway. Motorists are advised that the speed limit has been reduced to 35 MPH through this area. Traffic may be stopped for short periods of time to allow equipment to pass. Expect minor delays.

CAMPBELL COUNTY

  • US 27 Racetrack Road to East Nagel Road. (Falmouth to Newport Road) - Road Construction continues on US 27. The work zone will encompass the area between Parkside Drive and Nagel Road (West); flaggers may be used at multiple locations along mainline US 27. Traffic patterns on the North End near Racetrack Road have switched to a new alignment (use caution and watch for traffic control devices) access to all streets in the area will remain open. Short Siry Road and Boyd Road will be closed. New KY 154 is open and provides access to East Nagel Road and local traffic on Old KY 154. Siry Road is now closed and only open to local traffic, thru traffic should use new Siry Road located 0.2 mile south. Access to Herringer Road from US 27 in the area of KY 154 is closed; Herringer Road should be accessed via KY 1936 at Grants Lick. Access at KY 1936 is closed at the intersection of US 27. Access to and from KY 1936 will be provided via a detour on the newly constructed pavement (use caution and watch for traffic control devices). Watch for construction equipment entering and leaving the roadway. The speed limit throughout the work-zone is reduced to 45 MPH.

GRANT COUNTY

  • KY 2936 (Keefer Road) - Slide repairs will continue until approximately June 15th (except on weekends) with the road closed between approximately 7 am and 7 pm. Please watch for construction traffic.
  • US 25 - Slide repairs will begin around June 16th near Heekin Pike (KY 2937). US 25 will remain open but long delays are possible as repairs on done to a slide just south of the intersection with Heekin Pike. Work will take place Mon through Fri from approximately 7 am to 7 pm until June 24. Please drive with caution through the work zone and be aware of flaggers, equipment and other construction activity in this area.
  • US 25 Bridge over the NS Railroad in Williamstown – The bridge carrying US 25 over the Norfolk Southern Railroad is closed to traffic. The new bridge is expected to be open to traffic by Labor Day weekend, September 2, 2011. A detour will be posted utilizing KY 36, I-75, and Barnes Road to direct traffic around the suggested detour routes. This area will continue to be an active construction zone. Stay alert and watch for flagmen as trucks and equipment continue entering and leaving this area. Because of the construction work in close proximity to the traffic, the speed limit will remain at 25 MPH. Please watch for flagmen and use caution when driving through the work zones and pay attention to construction personnel, vehicles and equipment. All accesses to businesses and residences will remain open throughout the closure including access to Webb Park. Traffic signals will be in place for traffic entering from the North. This section will be reduced to a one lane road as construction continues.

HARRISON COUNTY

  • KY 1284 (Sunrise Road) will be closed beginning on Thursday, June 16 from 7 am to 7 pm for slide repairs and culvert replacement. The closure will be Monday thru Friday until June 24, weather permitting. The road will be closed at mile point 1.7 between Dale Lane and Justice Lane. Please seek an alternate route during the closure.
  • White Oak Pike (KY 356) Bridge over Mill Creek 2.5 miles west of JCT. with KY 36: KY-356 Roadway will close at the Bridge over Mill Creek beginning Monday, June 6, 2011 this date coincides with the last day of school. The closure will remain in place until further notice. There will be no outlet across the bridge from either direction. The suggested Detour Routes Ky-1842 and Ky-36 will be plainly marked with highway signs. This project will become an active construction area and there will be minimal turn around area at the bridge. Please watch for Roadway Closed signs/barricades, and Detour signs. There will be an increase of truck and construction traffic in this area. Watch for signs, slow down and be cautious. The project completion date is September 30, 2011.
  • New US 27 Bridge over CSX Railroad in Cynthiana is now open to all traffic. Church Street is now closed to through traffic. A signed detour is marked for Church Street. Overall completion of project is summer of 2011.

KENTON COUNTY

  • US 25 (Dixie Highway @ Dudley Road) – Construction of a turn lane on US 25 (Dixie Highway) at Dudley Road continues. Lane closures and flagging can be expected during daytime hours between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm; and during nighttime hours between 6:00 pm - 6:00 am. Please watch for flaggers, traffic control devices and construction traffic entering and leaving the roadway.
  • KY 177 (Decoursey Pike) - Resurfacing project on KY 177 from Pendleton County Line to Rich Road (0.0 – 2.8 mile marker). Lane closures and flagging can be expected during daytime hours. Please watch for flaggers, traffic control devices and construction traffic entering and leaving the roadway.
  • KY 2046 (Fiskburg Road) - Resurfacing project on KY 2046 from KY 17 to KY 14 (5.6 – 8.4 mile marker). Lane closures and flagging can be expected during daytime hours. Please watch for flaggers, traffic control devices and construction traffic entering and leaving the roadway.
  • KY 1486 (Fowler Creek Road) - Resurfacing project on KY 1486 from Pelly Rd. to KY 17 (2.6 – 3.4 mile marker). Lane closures and flagging can be expected during daytime hours. Please watch for flaggers, traffic control devices and construction traffic entering and leaving the roadway.
  • KY 2042 (Moffett Road) - Resurfacing project on KY 2042 from KY 17 to Armstrong Rd. (0.0 – 4.1 mile marker). Lane closures and flagging can be expected during daytime hours. Please watch for flaggers, traffic control devices and construction traffic entering and leaving the roadway.
  • KY 2043 (Banklick Road) - Resurfacing project on KY 2043 from KY 16 to Wright Rd. (5.8 – 8.1 mile marker). Lane closures and flagging can be expected during daytime hours. Please watch for flaggers, traffic control devices and construction traffic entering and leaving the roadway.
  • KY 371 (Orphanage Road) - Resurfacing project on KY 371 from KY 17 to US 25 (0.0 – 1.817 mile marker). Lane closures and flagging can be expected during daytime hours between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm; and during nighttime hours between 7:00 pm - 6:00 am. Please watch for flaggers, traffic control devices and construction traffic entering and leaving the roadway. Work anticipated to continue for approximately two weeks. Work is weather dependent.
  • I-75 Northbound M.P. 189 (at an existing KYTC Detention Basin) - As this project continues, trucks may be entering and leaving the highway at various times via the right shoulder approximately 0.5 mile north of the Kyles Lane overpass, and approximately 2.5 miles south of the Ohio River. Use caution, watch for trucks and police escorts using the right shoulder.
  • Taylor Mill Road - KY 16 (From Sunbrite Drive to Kleete Road) -Construction is beginning on Taylor Mill Road (KY 16) between Sunbrite Drive and Kleete Road. All traffic patterns will remain in their current location at this time. The speed limit throughout the project will be reduced to 30 MPH. Please watch for flaggers and construction traffic entering and leaving the roadway.
  • KY 1120 (12th Street/MLK Blvd.) - Road Construction continues on 12th Street in Covington. Construction activities will take place between the NB I-75 off ramp and Scott Street. Madison Avenue will be closed between Robbins Avenue and 12th Street/MLK Blvd. starting April 25th for approximately 90 days (weather permitting). Southbound traffic on Madison should take Robbins Avenue to Scott Street. Northbound traffic on Madison should take 12th Street/MLK Blvd. east to Greenup. 11th Street traffic should use Scott Street to go south on Madison or east on 12th Street/MLK Blvd. and use Greenup street to go north on Madison. Message boards are up and detours will be posted. The north side of Russell Street is now open to traffic. The north side of Banklick Street will be closed at the intersection of 12th Street/MLK Blvd. Access to and from the north side of Banklick Street will be provided via Holman Street. Watch for traffic control devices and construction traffic entering and leaving the roadway. The speed limit throughout the work-zone will be 20 MPH. The intersections of 12th and Main, 12th and Lee, and 12th and Holman will no longer be signalized. The intersections will instead become a 4-Way stop using "Stop Signs".
  • KY 236 (Commonwealth Ave.) - Resurfacing project on KY 236 from US 25 to Baker Street (1.4 – 2 mile marker). Lane closures and flagging can be expected during daytime hours between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm; and during nighttime hours between 6:00 pm - 6:00 am. Please watch for flaggers, traffic control devices and construction traffic entering and leaving the roadway.
  • US 25 (Dixie Highway) - Resurfacing project on US 25 Dixie Highway between the I-75 overpass and Sleepy Hollow Drive (9.8 – 10.8 mile marker). Lane closures and flagging can be expected during daytime hours between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm; and during nighttime hours between 6:00 pm - 6:00 am. Please watch for flaggers, traffic control devices and construction traffic entering and leaving the roadway.

PENDLETON COUNTY

  • KY 17 (LLL Highway) – Beginning at 9 am on June 20 through June 25th, KY 17 will be closed to thru traffic from KY 3185 (MP 2.58) to KY 467 (MP 7.00) while crews install a culvert pipe near the 4.5 mile marker. A signed detour will be in place directing traffic to use KY 3185, KY 177, and KY 467.

The KYTC offers the following tips for motorists when they approach a work zone:

  1. Expect the unexpected.
  2. Slow down.
  3. Don't tailgate. Keep a safe distance between you and the car ahead of you.
  4. Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the construction workers and equipment.
  5. Pay attention to the signs.
  6. Obey road crew flaggers.
  7. Stay alert and minimize distractions.
  8. Keep up with the traffic flow.
  9. Schedule enough time and call 511 or go to www.511.ky.gov for Kentucky traffic and travel information. Remember construction and maintenance activities are scheduled on a tentative basis and are subject to change depending on weather conditions, emergencies, and other factors beyond the control of the Department of Highways. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet appreciates your patience during the construction process.

Motorists are urged to use caution in work areas, and to be alert for flaggers, workers, and equipment which may block a portion of the roadway, and other items of concern in work zones. Motorists are asked to pay careful attention to warning signs alerting them of the roadwork and obey work zone speed limits where applicable.
