HAMILTON, OH (FOX19) - The 2011 Fire/EMD Safety, Health and Survival week kicked off on Saturday, with the Hamilton Fire Department participating.
Safety Week is sponsored by the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) and the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) and aims to improve firefighter safety and health to give everybody a better chance of survival when emergencies happen.
The theme for Safety Week this year is "Surviving the Fire Ground: Fire Fighter, Fire Officer, and Command Preparedness" which encourages all fire/EMS personnel to focus on survival education.
According to the Hamilton Fire Department, it is critical for firefighters to focus on their own survival on the fire ground.
Hamilton Fire Chief Joe Schutte says, "The purpose is to avoid fire ground tragedies to firefighters in the first place. Early recognition of potential dangers and evaluating risk versus injury is critical to a successful outcome on the emergency scene."
