COLUMBUS, OH (FOX19) -

A new Ohio record longnose gar, taken by bowfishing, has been certified by the Outdoor Writers of Ohio State Record Fish Committee.

An Ohio state record longnose gar, weighing 19.21 pounds, was shot by Zachary Jared of Akron, Ohio, at Turkeyfoot Lake in Summit County on May 12, 2011 while bowfishing at night.  Jared's record gar is 53.1 inches long with a 20.47 inch girth.

His catch replaces the previous state bowfishing record longnose gar that was shot in the Little Miami River by Jake Kerstetter on July 11, 2008, weighing 14.72 pounds and measuring 50-1/2 inches long.

Ohio state record fish are certified by the Outdoor Writers of Ohio State Record Fish Committee. Assisting in the process are fisheries biologists with the Ohio Division of Wildlife.
