Summer Sangria from Suburban Chef Barbie Hahn

Summer has officially arrived!  As the weather heats up, it is nice to have an easy drink recipe that you can take to parties or enjoy on the patio watching a beautiful sunset.  You could even ask friends to bring a bottle of wine to contribute to the Sangria party and get everyone involved! This recipe is great because there are a few basic steps to follow, beyond that, you add whatever is in season.  Try this out on your friends or spouse when you want to kick back, relax and enjoy the best of summer.
A couple simple tips will make your Sangria turn out perfect every time. Number one, do not add ice to the sangria.  Only add ice to the glass if needed.  Number two, let the Sangria chill in the fridge for at least an hour.  The flavors need time to develop from the fruit.  You can make it a day before. Number three do not add the sparkling wine, or soda until right before serving. Sangria will become "flat" if added while chilling.
Basic Recipe
1 bottle Pinot Grigio, Savignon Blanc or Rose wine
1/2 cup of brandy (apple, cherry, peach, blackberry or plain)
1/2 cup of fruit juice or fruit nectar
1  bottle of sparkling wine, or 32 ounces of ginger ale, sparkling water or lemon lime soda.  Use whatever you have around the house, this is what makes this recipe so easy, it is versatile!

Pour wine and brandy into a pitcher and add any of the fruit combinations below and let chill for at least one hour or overnight. Make sure and cover pitcher if leaving overnight so Sangria does not pick up any odors from the fridge.  Right before serving add the sparkling wine or soda. This recipe is EASY to double and triple for parties.
Fruit combinations
Stone Fruit Sangria
Halve and seed 1 peach, plum and nectarine and slice into quarters. Seed a dozen cherries. Slice 1 cup grapes in half.
Berry Sangria
This is great with Rose wine. One orange sliced, 1 pint strawberries sliced, one cup raspberries. 1 cup white grapes sliced in half.
Melon Mint Sangria
1 cup each, honeydew, cantaloupe and watermelon chopped into one inch squares, add 1/2 cup fresh mint leaves
