SPRINGDALE, OH (FOX19) - Police are looking for suspects after man fell victim to a pigeon drop scam.
It started on June 8 in the parking lot of Lowe's in Springdale.
Police say Suspect #1, wearing black dress clothes and speaking with an African accent, asked for directions and eventually a ride.
At some point Suspect #1 showed victim a large wad of cash claiming his brother had died and he'd won a large settlement. They ended up at a hotel lot in Sharonville where Suspect #2 was walking by and the two acted like they didn't know each other.
The three began to talk and Suspect #1 showed the cash again. Suspect #2, described as a male black in his 50's wearing dress clothes and a tie, told him he should put the money in the bank and should not be carrying this money around, and the victim agreed.
Suspect #1 began to talk about trust and how he didn't trust banks in America. Eventually all three ended up driving in victim's minivan to PNC Bank on E. Kemper in Springdale. They strategically had him park on the opposite side of the entrance to the bank.
Suspect #1 continued on with how he didn't trust banks and how he thought the American Army would follow him out of the bank.
Suspect #2 then stated that he would show Suspect #1 that banks were trustworthy. He walked towards the bank entrance and came back a few minutes later with $10,000 cash. He then let victim and Suspect #1 drive around the block holding the cash as a sign of trust.
When they returned, Suspect #1 stated he still wasn't sure and asked victim to do the same. Victim went into the bank and withdrew $3,000. He came out and let Suspect #1 and Suspect #2 hold the money while they walked around the block to show trust. They never returned.
Bank surveillance shows that Suspect #2 never went inside the bank but instead went inside a maroon minivan which was parked outside the bank entrance.
Suspect #3, a tall, heavyset black male was in the van and did actually go inside the bank. He went in to get a roll of quarters and while there, took several PNC Bank money envelopes to be used as props.
After Suspect #2 got out of the maroon van, it pulled away and went to where Suspect #1 and Suspect #2 walked, likely to pick them up. Suspect #1 was never captured on video.
Anyone with information on the identity of these suspects should contact Crimestoppers at 513-352-3040.
