Sheriff warns: Don't give out banking or credit information over the phone

BUTLER COUNTY, OH (FOX19) - Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones is issuing scam alert, telling citizens to be wary of phone calls from people asking for your credit, debit, or bank account information.

This alert comes after a Butler County Resident got a phone call from someone who claimed to be "the U.S. Government." The caller then said that the person qualified for $7000, but would need credit or debit card information so that the money could be deposited into their account.

The citizen refused to provide the information over the phone, and the caller hung up.

Sheriff Jones cautions everyone to never give this information out over the phone unless you have initiated the call and are confident that you are speaking with a reputable company. Check your credit card statements when you receive them, and report any suspicious or unauthorized charges to your credit card company immediately.

If you think you've been scammed, call your local law enforcement agency.
