BURLINGTON, KY (FOX19) - One small neighborhood in Burlington brought together more than 1,000 people on Saturday to collect care packages to send overseas as part of their Fourth of July celebration.
The purpose behind the "4th for Our Soldiers" party in the Arborwood subdivision in Boone County is to help active soldiers and their families. With enough food to feed 1,100 people, the "4th For Our Soldiers" event collects basic necessities to send overseas.
16-year-old Brady Dunn had the idea six years ago, and the response continues to grow.
"It makes you feel good and it makes you feel safe. It makes you feel that these guys are giving their lives for us and we should do something for them," said Dunn.
With the help of his mom Michelle and the entire neighborhood, last year's event raised more than $5,000. This year's goal is $8,000.
"He wanted to do something for people he didn't even know because he knows how great of a job they are doing over there and that they are very under appreciated," said Michelle Dunn.
Feeling the appreciation is soldier Chad Ludwick. Ludwick gets to spend this Fourth of July with his wife and three kids after serving a year in Afghanistan.
"It's a great feeling knowing you have more than other soldiers behind you that you have a whole community," said Ludwick.
The event concluded with a fireworks show put on by Rozzi's Famous Fireworks.
