Volunteers collect petitions to make Opening Day an official holiday

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Volunteers gathered Saturday morning in front of Great American Ball Park in an effort to make opening day an official holiday in Cincinnati.

The volunteers were assigned different neighborhoods, and given petitions for people to sign. Anyone who brings back the signed petitions by 3:00 p.m. will receive a ticket voucher for a future Reds game. They will also be entered into a raffle to win diamond seats and other memorabilia.

MSA Architecture started the push to make it official back in March.

The group's goal is to pass a City Ordinance formally declaring Reds Opening Day an official holiday.

To get the ordinance on the November ballot, at least 8,522 valid signatures on formal petition forms must be given to the City Finance Director by July 11, 2011.

However, the group say to be seriously considered, at least 15,000-17,000 total signatures are needed.

The total population of Cincinnati is more than 332,000.
