BAKERSFIELD, CA (FOX19) - A former Cincinnati Bengals player is dead after being shot and killed by a California sheriff's deputy in front of his teenage son.
Police approached David Lee Turner, 56, as he was leaving the store with his 19-year-old son and accused him of buying alcohol for minors.
Turner's son says one of the officers hit his father on the back of his legs with a club, then fired shots when the beer Turner bought exploded on the ground.
The sheriff's department says shots were fired because Turner hit one of the officers over the head with the bag.
Turner played for the Bengals as a runningback from 1978 until 1980.
