(FOX19) - It was thirty years ago - on Aug. 1, 1981 - that MTV made its debut.
The network began by airing music videos, but over the years, it has gotten away from music videos to air reality shows such as Real World, Teen Mom and Jersey Shore.
The first video that aired on MTV was "Video Killed the Radio Star" by the Buggles.
The network is credited with revolutionizing TV and the music industry. It began in smaller markets before it took off after airing Michael Jackson's Billie Jean in 1983.
In honor of the occasion, VH1 Classic, a sister station of the MTV network, devoted all weekend to airing classing MTV programming, such as Remote Control, YO! MTV Raps and Beavis and Butt-Head as well as moments from live events such as The MTV Movie Awards, the VMA's and Live Aid.
