An Avondale man is behind bars after leading police on a chase Tuesday night.

It started around 9:30 p.m. when an officer observed a vehicle pulling out of the Sycamore Hotel parking lot without a working rear license plate light.

The officer initiated a traffic stop on Reading Road, but the driver refused to stop.

The vehicle continued to travel at about 35 to 40 mph down several residential streets. The vehicle pursuit ended at the dead end of Wynnwood Lane, where the driver then fled on foot.

The driver was apprehended a short time later. Police found heroin, crack cocaine and prescription drugs inside the vehicle.

The driver, identified as Nicholas Whitmire, had four outstanding traffic capiases. He was also charged with failure to comply, possession of drugs, trafficking in drugs, driving under suspension, license plate light and failure to reinstate.

He is being held in the Hamilton County Justice Center.
