Local NAACP head temporarily steps down

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - The Cincinnati chapter of the NAACP held a press conference Wednesday to announce that president Chris Smitherman is stepping down.

Smitherman said is temporarily stepping down to run for Cincinnati city council again.

Smitherman took over as president of the Cincinnati NAACP in 2007. Before that he was a Cincinnati council member.

First Vice President Juanita Adams will take over the presidency.

Smitherman said he had to step down because it's in the NAACP charter that members can't run for public office and be president.
