The YMCA of Greater Cincinnati Board of Directors announced that they will be keeping the membership services at the Melrose YMCA in Walnut Hills open.
On June 29, the board voted to discontinue membership services at the Melrose YMCA. On Thursday, the board voted to change their decision, and the building will remain open as a full facility YMCA which includes fitness, swimming, afterschool and summer camp activities.
As part of the agreement, the board will also appoint at "Y Task Force," which they say will be comprised of community leaders and Y members to explore the development of a new Y as a replacement facility in Cincinnati's eastern neighborhoods.
The board also voted on June 29th to close the Williams YMCA in East Walnut Hills. That building will remain closed.
In a statement released Thursday by Michael Zorn, board chair of the YMCA of Greater Cincinnati, and Sandy Berlin Walker, President and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Cincinnati, they say, "We have been encouraged by the community expressions of support for continued services at the Melrose Y and Williams Y. the importance of our members' relationships and experiences at these and other facilities in our regional system has reaffirmed what we know - that the Y is about people, not facilities."
