SPRINGBORO, OH (FOX19) - Police have released the name of the 5-year-old fatally struck by a van in Springboro on Tuesday.
Police say Constance Gooding, 27, parked her van and left the vehicle to speak to an acquaintance nearby. Policy say 5-year-old Dylan Gooding left the van as well and stood behind the vehicle.
Neighbors say the child was waiting for the bus to take him to school on his second day of kindergarten.
Without warning, the van began moving backwards from the parking space, and rolled into the street and into the driveway on the other side of the street.
Police said the child's mother tried to stop the van, but it had already hit her child. Police said a 2-year-old, Dylan's little brother, was in the van at the time.
When police arrived at the scene, they called Care Flight and took the Dylan to Childrens Hospital in Dayton. He later died of his injuries.
The Gooding family released a statement Wednesday that read:
"The Gooding Family is in extreme distress at this time. They are still trying to contact family members with the tragic news. We ask the community to keep the family in your thoughts and prayers."
Springboro Police and a Springboro Special Traffic Accident Investigator are investigating the incident.
A family spokesperson says Dylan is the middle child of three in the family. The community is working on setting up a fund for the family.
