The FOX19 Friday Prep Rally continues its tour by making its a way back to the Bluegrass State as two of Northern Kentucky's hottest teams, the Boone County Rebels and the Covington Catholic Colonels, are set to face off in Florence.
Both teams have gotten off to hot starts and a win here will keep the momentum rolling. The last time Boone County is on a three-game winning streak for the first time since winning seven in a row in 2007. CovCath looked impressive in their first two contests before hitting a bump in the road against LaSalle a week ago. The Colonels hope to get back on track here.
COVINGTON CATHOLIC (2-1) AT BOONE COUNTY (3-0)
Site: Owen Hauck Stadium, Irv Goode Field
Kickoff: 7:30 P.M.
TV: Tune in to LIVE pregame show on FOX19 @7:00 p.m.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Boone County moved Bryson Thompson from quarterback to running back and put Kameron Schwartz under center this season. Both moves have paid dividends for the Rebels and have helped keep opposing defenses guessing. CovCath boasts one of Northern Kentucky's top offensive lines with Bradley Way, Tim Connaughton and Max Halpin all back for another season. The unit has helped paved the way for running back Gabe Gray and allowed quarterback Blake Bir to stay upright.
TEAM TRENDS: The two teams have not faced each other since 2006. CovCath has won seven of the last nine meetings with Boone County dating back 1998. The Rebels 3-0 start is their best since the Shaun Alexander era. The Colonels have scored 28 points or more in eight of their last 10 games dating back to last season. CovCath is seeking its first winning season since 2006.
COVCATH'S KEYS TO VICTORY: The Colonels must get a better effort defensively. After holding Campbell County to just two points in the opener, CovCath has allowed 76 points over their last seven quarters. Containing the run is where it needs to start. They need to avoid giving up large chunks of yardage on early downs and force the Rebels into third-and-long situations. A good mix offensively will help bolster the Colonels chances by keeping Boone County off balanced.
BOONE COUNTY'S KEYS TO VICTORY: Setting the tempo early on is a must for the Rebels as they need to avoid getting involved in a shootout. One of the best ways to keep CovCath's high-scoring offense silent is by keeping them on the sidelines. If Boone County can grind it out and move the chains they will wear down the Colonels' defense and gain a distinct advantage. The turnover battle could be the difference. The Rebels forced three turnovers last week and if they can repeat that performance they will likely prevail.
PREDICTION: COVCATH 35, BOONE COUNTY 31
