Ohio River bridge inspection to take two more weeks

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Louisville's mayor says it will take engineers about two more weeks to complete their inspection of a key Ohio River bridge that was closed indefinitely last week following the discovery of cracks in steel support beams.

Mayor Greg Fischer joined U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and other members of Congress and Indiana and Kentucky transportation officials Saturday in viewing the inspection efforts on the Sherman Minton Bridge that links Louisville, Ky., and New Albany, Ind.

McConnell said the engineers are "working very hard to figure out what needs to be done" to repair the bridge and it's too early to know how long it would remain closed. The nearly 50-year-old double-deck bridge had carried some 80,000 vehicles a day.

Fischer urged commuters to continue carpooling to reduce traffic congestion.
