Walk raises money in honor of Notre Dame Academy student killed in car accident

FORT WRIGHT, KY (FOX19) - Everyone was all smiles at the 2nd Annual Smiles & Miles.

The 5K walk was hosted Sunday, Sept. 18 in honor of Maria Schaffstein. Schaffstein was killed in a car accident while traveling home from Spring Break in 2010 with seven other friends. Several others were left with serious injuries.

Last year over 900 people came out to support Maria's family and friends and they raised $16,000.  Twenty percent went to St. Agnes Boosters to support a capital project. Another twenty percent went to an 8th grade scholarship in Maria's name. Twenty percent went to the St. Agnes teacher wish list and another forty percent was given anonymously for financial aid for families in need.

"While the hole in our hearts are still there, they've been smoothed around the edges a little bit and so this is kind of a celebration more for me," said John Schaffstein, Maria's father.

There is no word at this time on how much money they raised this year.
