GLENCOE, KY (FOX19) - Kentucky State Police have released the name of the man who shot the Gallatin County Sheriff on Tuesday night.
Police say Erich Stahl, 20, of Glencoe, shot Sheriff Josh Neale before apparently turning the gun on himself.
Sheriff Neale and Deputy Captain Brent McDonald responded to a developing hostage situation at a home at the intersection of KY 16 and Ponderosa Drive in Glencoe at around 10:23 p.m. That's when Stahl opened fire with a .357 magnum revolver and shot Neale.
Deputy Captain McDonald immediately placed Sheriff Neale in a police cruiser and drove him to the Gallatin County fairgrounds, where they were met by a medical helicopter that transported Neale to University Hospital. Neale was treated and released Wednesday morning.
Stahl, a convicted felon, had a criminal history including an assault conviction. An autopsy is being conducted Wednesday at the Northern Kentucky Medical Examiner's office.
