Passenger killed in crash on I-75

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Cincinnati Police are investigating a fatal traffic accident that occurred on Sunday.

It happened around 4:30 a.m. on I-75 at the 9.6 mile marker.

Police say Mark Mathis, 27, was driving a Pontiac Bonneville southbound and exited at Paddock Road. He failed to maintain control of his vehicle, went off the left side of the roadway and struck a lightpole.

Derek Williams, 24, a passenger in Mathis' car, was taken to University of Cincinnati Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Mathis is in critical condition at UC Hospital.

Police say alcohol and speed are considered factors in this crash. It's unclear if seatbelts were in use.
