LOGAN TOWNSHIP, IN (FOX19) -

A man who was named a person of interest in a shooting and series of burglaries in Dearborn County has been apprehended in Minnesota.

William Gajdik is a prison escapee from Nebraska who was named as a person of interest for shooting a homeowner in the back after a burglary on North Dearborn Road in early September. He was also accused of several burglaries.

The Dearborn-Ohio County prosecutor has charged Gajdik with attempted murder, burglary with the intent to cause injury, robbery with the intent to cause injury, burglary while armed with a deadly weapon, robbery while armed with a deadly weapon, and auto theft.

"We were able to track pawn shop activity that he was doing  - he had pawned some items in Fargo on Oct. 3," said Sgt. Shane McHenry with the Dearborn County Sheriff's Office.

Sharon Hopper lives across the street from the man who was shot in rural Dearborn County.  She says she's relieved to hear that Gajdik is in jail and says her neighbor is still in the hospital, recovering from his injuries.

"We're cutting his grass and watching everything that goes around," said Hopper."We're taking care of his stuff.  The last I heard he's doing a lot better and they've unconnected him from a lot of tubes and things so he's getting a lot better."

The county prosecutor says it isn't clear yet when Gajdik could be sent to Indiana to face these new charges, but he promised to push for strict penalties.
