MONROE, OH (FOX19) - Friends, family and members of the Solid Rock Church congregation said goodbye to its founder, Pastor Lawrence Bishop.

Bishop passed away last Friday at the age of 69 after suffering a massive stroke.

Hundreds of people went to the church on Thursday night for the first of two visitations. Lines stretched outside of the church doors and into the parking lot.

The pastor's music played outside of the church all afternoon while family, friends and strangers waited for their chance to say goodbye. Many visitors fought to hold back tears as they spoke about their beloved pastor.

"He was just a phenomenal man," said church member Rhonda Wilson. "I'll miss him tremendously. Tremendously."

Pastor Bishop founded the Monroe church with his wife more than 30 years ago. They began with just a dozen members. Today, it's grown to one of the largest in the Tri-State.

"{The pastor and his wife} were just godly people," said church member Jerry Marsh. "They could preach the word, and just get it across to everybody."

"He stood for what he believed in," said Leslie Marsh, a church member. "What he spoke on the pulpit, he didn't care if you believed it or not or stood with him. He was true to his word."

The church is also known for its large statue of Jesus which was struck by lightning back in June. A new sculpture is in the works, and church members pledge to finish it by the end of the year.

Visitation continues on Friday from ten until noon. The funeral will immediately follow.
