Community pays respects to Pastor Lawrence Bishop

MONROE, OH (FOX19) -- The founder and pastor of the Solid Rock Church was laid to rest Friday, Pastor Lawrence Bishop died last week from a massive stroke at the age of 69.

Bishop founded the church along I-75 in Monroe 33 years ago,and built its congregation to 3,000 members, nearly all of whom were in attendance for his funeral services Friday.

"Lawrence has just had a major impact on our lives and we want to do something that's going to have an impact on other peoples lives," said church member Pam Napier.

Members say he was a man who stood for a message and stood behind his ministry.
 
"He always said as long as you stand, God will deliver, and I will always remember that message," said Anthony Atkinson, another church member.
 
Thousands of church members, friends and visitors from across the country packed into the Solid Rock Church to pay their last respects to their pastor.
 
All over the United States people have come, Texas, California, some of the New England states," said Ron Carter, Church Administrator.
 
While saddened by the sudden loss, members say this time is about celebrating the Pastor's life, the funeral program highlighted the pastor as a man of many talents -- a husband, a father, a preacher, a  musician, and of course a cowboy.
 
"He truly did love his horses, that was a great passion of his and I heard some of the people of the church say, God has a lot of horses and now he need a great horsemen up there to take care of him," said member Jeff Sparks.
 
Darlene Bishop, the pastor's wife who also founded the church with Bishop was led down the aisle of the church be her grandchildren -- a symbol of the legacy the Pastor leaves behind, for the future leaders of his church
 
"Darlene and Lawrence have sewed into our life, their family has sewed into our life for 28 years, we're just blessed to be able to call Solid Rock Church our home church," Napier said.
 
The Burial was held at Woodside Cemetery in Middletown, Bishop is survived by his wife Darlene, four children, and 10 grandchildren.
