Battle over streetcar heating up

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - The battle over Cincinnati's streetcar plan is heating up as Election Day approaches.

The current and former leadership of the Cincinnati NAACP are not on the same page when it comes to Issue 48.

Dr. Milton Hinton and the Hon. Nathaniel Jones, both with decades of service to the NAACP, will be holding a press conference Wednesday at City Hall in support for what they call "clean, affordable growth-oriented transportation in Cincinnati."

The stance of the group's three time former leader and general council directly opposed the stance that Chris Smitherman is taking.

Smitherman is the most recent president who has temporary stepped down while making a run a city council. He opposes the streetcar plan.

If Issue 48 is approved by voters, it would impose an outright ban on any passenger rail project within Cincinnati city limits until Dec. 31, 2020. Due to its wording, the ban would affect any source of funding regardless if it was federal, state, local or privately financed.

Others who have urged a "no" vote on Issue 48 include the League of Women Voters, the Charter Committee and the Chamber of Commerce.
