Komen adding 10k race for 2012 Race for the Cure

Posted: Updated:

The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Greater Cincinnati Affiliate announced Wednesday it will offer a 10K race for the 2012 Race for the Cure for the first time in its history.

The 10K race will be offered in addition to the existing 5K, 2K and Family Fun Run. With the race at 6.2 miles, Race organizers hope it attracts a new type of runner who finds the additional miles more challenging.

"We saw our largest crowd ever a few weekends ago during our 14th Annual Race for the Cure," said Peggy Isenogle, executive director of the Komen Greater Cincinnati Affiliate.  "We are planning to break 20,000 participants and hope to see new runners join us in the fight against breast cancer."

The Greater Cincinnati Affiliate decided to pursue the 10K following a change in national race guidelines. Chicago was the first city to hold a 10K Race for the Cure this past September, and the Greater Cincinnati Affiliate expects a 10K to be a success locally.

Next year will mark the 15th Annual Greater Cincinnati Race for the Cure, which raises money for the fight against breast cancer.

"For our participants, the Race for the Cure is so much more than crossing the finish line: it's ‘I fought this battle and won,'" said Amy Wagner, director of development of the Komen Greater Cincinnati Affiliate. "We want even more people to witness this wondrous moment for breast cancer survivors right here in the Tri-State."

The 15th Annual Race for the Cure will take place Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012.
