A Covington police officer is being called a hero after his quick thinking saved the life of an infant boy.
Officer Matt Hugenberg responded to a house on the 4300 Block of Vermont Avenue to the report of a non-responsive child Thursday morning. According to Lt. Col. Spike Jones, when Officer Hugenberg arrived at the scene, he assessed the situation and immediately began performing CPR.
The child then began to breathe on its own.
When Officer Hugenberg spoke to FOX19, he talked about the range of emotions he went through in that moment.
"I was very nervous going in and was very elated at the end when he took his first breath after doing CPR...Just glad to see him taking his own breath and being able to hand him over to an ambulance crew that is much more skilled than I am," he said.
The child continues to be treated at Children's Hospital, and is breathing on his own.
