HAMILTON, OH (FOX19) - Fire crews are investigating a fatal fire that occurred in Hamilton early Wednesday morning.
It happened just after midnight in the 700 block of Sycamore Street.
When police arrived at the scene, they were met by a woman and two children who told them they were in the house along with an elderly man when the fire started. The woman and children were able to escape, but the man could not.
Hamilton firefighters encountered heavy fire throughout portions of the first and second floor. When the fire was extinguished, the remains of Charles E. Dunaway, 78, were found on the first floor.
One of the three females, Alberta Dunaway, was transported to Fort Hamilton Hospital by Hamilton Fire Department Paramedics for burns she received while attempting to save the deceased, who was her father-in-law.
The children were not injured.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but it is believed that oxygen was in use in the house.
Damage is estimated at $75,000.
Investigation into the cause of the fire is being conducted by the Hamilton Fire Department, and the Hamilton Police Department, with the assistance of the Ohio State Fire Marshal's Office.
