COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) - A Welch Primary School student got a wonderful surprise on Veterans Day when her grandfather returned from Iraq and surprised her at school.
The school was holding a Veterans Day assembly on Friday morning when Colin Ruedger, who just returned from his fourth tour of duty in Iraq, surprised his granddaughter, Mackenzie, 6.
"I felt really happy and I missed him a lot," said Mackenzie.
Ruedger said his unit was surprised in learning that they'd be coming home in about half the time they were scheduled in Iraq. He's been home for about a week, but kept it a secret to Mackenzie and her older sister, Riley.
The Veterans Day program also included an ROTC presentation of the colors, a book read called the Impossible Patriotism Project, students singing and honoring service members in the audience.
