Parents battle rain as school camp out nears end

CLIFTON, OH (FOX19) - Dozens of parents battled heavy rain on Monday night and Tuesday morning as a camp out to get their children enrolled in one of Cincinnati Public Schools' magnet schools comes to an end.

Several parents have been camping outside Fairview German Language School in Clifton since last week. They have battled a few nights of cold temperatures, and on Monday night, dealt with heavy rain.

Enrollment for the regular application period doesn't begin until Nov. 16, but there are so few spots available that parents camping out.

Students must live within the areas of the magnet elementary schools they want to attend, and parents must go to the school to put in an application.

"About everybody here is making a sacrifice to make sure their kids have an opportunity at a new education, a different education you can't experience at the public schools in town," said Patrick Hazelwood, who started the line.

Hazelwood said parents made sure everyone who was camping out had the proper sleeping gear to stay warm and dry.
