More families relying on Reach Out Lakota for Holidays

WEST CHESTER, OH (FOX19) -

The non-profit group Reach Out Lakota, serving needy families in West Chester, Liberty Townships and the Lakota School District is preparing to send out 200 Thanksgiving meals, complete with all the favorite fixins.

"It really gives something back to the community, and I feel like this is very beneficial to a lot of people," said volunteer Tim Harmon.

Liberty Township mother Kim Clark say if it weren't for their help, a Thanksgiving Meal for her family might not be possible

"We get to spend the time together and have a Thanksgiving like everyone else," Clark said.

Executive Director Lourdes Ward says there's a misconception that West Chester and Liberty Townships are predominantly wealthy communities, but she sees nearly five to 10 news families a week in need of assistance.

"Everybody assumes that everybody in West Chester/Liberty does not need help, but unfortunately with the economic downturn, we've seen instead of a 10 percent increase, a 20 to 30 percent increase in families asking for our assistance," Ward said.

Reach out Lakota also provides school supplies and clothes for eligible families.

"I think it's helping a lot of families, cause there's a lot of families that wouldn't have food on their table," Clark said.
