CINCINNATI (FOX19) - Here is Procter and Gamble's biographical information on former P&G Chairman and CEO John Smale.  He died early Saturday at 84.

 

BIOGRAPHICAL DATA SHEET ON JOHN G. SMALE

 

Retired Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

The Procter & Gamble Company

 

            A native of Listowel, Ontario, Canada, John G.  Smale graduated from Miami University (Ohio) in 1949.  He joined Procter & Gamble's Toilet Goods organization in 1952.  He became General Manager of the Toilet Goods Division in 1966, and was elected Vice President of that Division in 1967.  Mr. Smale was elected Vice President-Bar Soap and Household Cleaning Products Division in 1968 and Vice President-Packaged Soap and Detergent Division in 1969.  In 1970, he was elected Vice President-Group Executive and two years later he was elected to the Procter & Gamble Board of Directors.  He became an Executive Vice President in 1973.

 

            Mr. Smale became President of Procter & Gamble, with responsibility for all of the Company's United States operations, in May 1974, and was named Chief Executive in January 1981.  In April 1986, he was named Chairman of the Board, while continuing as Chief Executive of the Company.  He stepped down from these positions in January 1990.  He retired as an employee of the Company on December 31, 1990 and retired from the Board of Directors on June 30, 1995.

 

            Mr. Smale was Chairman of the Board of the General Motors Corporation from November 1992 until January 1996, and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Board of the General Motors Corporation until June 2000.  He is  an Emeritus Trustee of Kenyon College.  Additionally, Mr. Smale was inducted into the Cincinnati Business Hall of Fame in September 1993, inducted into the National Business Hall of Fame in April 1996, and inducted into the Advertising Hall of Fame in March 2002.  He received the Great Living Cincinnatian Award from the Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce in February 1997.  He also received the Order Francisco de Miranda in its First Class (the highest recognition Venezuela bestows unto a civilian) from President Caldera in March 1998 in Caracas, Venezuela.

 

            In May 1974, Mr. Smale received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio; in May 1979, he received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio; in May 1983, he received an honorary Doctor of Science degree from DePauw University, Greencastle, Indiana; in February 1985, he received an honorary Doctor of Civil Laws degree from St. Augustine's College, Raleigh, North Carolina; and in May 1986, he received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio.

 

            Additionally, he is a member of the following organizations:  the Queen City Club, the Commercial Club, the Cincinnati Country Club, and the Marathon Yacht Club.

 

            Mr. Smale was born August 1, 1927.  He married Phyllis Weaver in 1950.  She preceded him in death in 2006. Before Mr. Smale's passing on November 19, 2011, he was a resident of Marathon, Florida. John and Phyllis are survived by their four children:  John Gray, Jr., Catherine Anne, Lisa Beth, and Peter McKee.
