Investigators are trying to figure out what caused an early morning fire in a Mt. Airy apartment building Thursday.
Fire companies were called to the 2700 block of West North Bend Rd. at about 5:30 am Thursday. Initial arriving fire units reported heavy smoke from a two-story, occupied apartment building.
The fire was found by firefighters in a basement storage bin and was extinguished.
A search of the building revealed that the building had been evacuated. There were no injuries at the scene.
Firefighters say the fire was confined to the basement storage area, however, heavy smoke had spread through most of the building which contributed to the estimated $25,000 in fire and smoke damage.
The cause of the fire is still unknown.
