GREENDALE, IN (FOX19) - A 2009 graduate of Lawrenceburg High School who was seriously wounded in Afghanistan is on the road to recovery. Private First Class Brett Bondurant was hurt on Sept. 28 after an improvised explosive device blew up just east of Kandahar.
He is now in rehab at a hospital in San Antonio. Bondurant has both of his legs amputated, one at the knee, the other at the hip. His family is astonished with his recovery.
"Brett has his legs now. He will get two or three more sets but he has to get used to the one's he's got," said Janelle Bondurant, Brett's mother.
PFC Bondurant is also a newlywed. His long-time girlfriend, London Grimes, promised not to leave his side and exchanged marriage vows with the wounded soldier on November 5.
"She goes to all of his visits, all of his appointments. She helps him. He has nightmares in the middle of the night and if he sits up, she gets up with him," said Janelle.
PFC Bondurant is well enough to travel. He's expected home for Christmas but not before his grandfather pays him a visit in San Antonio this weekend. Bondurant turns 21 years old on Monday.
